some almost finishes!

Yesterday morning I was extra productive and got the binding sewn on two projects!   Yes you heard me right two!!  Now that doesn't include the hand stitching at the back but still!

Project one is a sneak peek at a gift I am nearly finished.

The fabric choices are not my normal choice but the recipients will like these.

Project 2 is a table runner for my Etsy shop.  I am quite pleased with how it has turned out despite have moments of sheer and utter panic!  I love the burgundy for the binding too! All very Autumny!

I am posting my Brit Quilt swap package off tomorrow also!  And I posted my first Hipbees quilting block to our Queen Bee Renee too!

It is a great feeling to complete something and move on to the next thing isn't it??

Today I get to join my daughter for her first lunch at school.  It is to get us to try out the fab school dinners but Emma being Emma insists on a packed lunch.  As her brother does the same I can't really deny her it!  So I will have a school dinner today and she can have her lunch box! Yum!

That's all for now folks!

Good morning!  Just a quick pop in to say hello and to show some pics of what I have been up to over the weekend.

I finished this cute little hexie brooch made of half inch paper pieced hexies - this is an extra for a swap -

Received this awesome Mute Hurricane bundle from Backstitch and some other bits.

tiny hexagon templates.

I have ordered my first piece of the C word fabric too.  I think it may become a table topper but we shall see!

Cute as pie!
I better scoot as the school bus is due shortly and Jacob is still lounging around and shoeless! Arggggghhhhhh

I sewed!

Well this has been Emma's first full week at school in P1 and Jacob's in P4 but Emma has another week of half days before she stays in ALL DAY ( well until 3pm!).

She is tired but enjoying it!

Anyway this means I got to sew this week!  Oh how great it felt to come home after dropping them off and having a clear block of time to actually, PLAN what I was going to do!

I finished a quilt top which is a present for some special people in my life.  It is a real surprise so I can't share it at the moment but as soon as they have the actual quilt I will share!

I just need to post off my August Hipbees block ( on Monday) and my BSQ3 Swap at the end of August.

I got permission from the wonderful artist who did this - Twoems

to recreate it in fabric! an experiment which may go horribly wrong but at least I will have tried!

a plan of sorts don't ask!

Of course I had to get some solids for this  from the awesome Alice @ Backstitch.

The bundle is a Klona solids Hurricane bundle called mute.  I got some Taupe for backing the gift quilt and burgundy for binding my AMH table runner ( I had a swatch and the burgundy is nearly a perfect match as I can get to the burgundy in the Clippings print! fab! ).

I have also cut out a ton of these to make some tiny Grandmother's Flower Garden brooches for my Etsy shop.  The brooch backings are in!

Phew! I will be glad of a break tomorrow!
Have a great weekend everyone x

experiments and more free motion quilting

So I haven't done a huge amount of sewing over the last week or so with back to school and first day of primary for one of the kids.

I have been trying out a wee experiment though!  You know when you get one of those ideas that you just have to get on with that will not wait???? Or am I just weird and impatient?

I have been inspired by all the geometric prints and paintings out there at the moment -

This is by Twoems and is listed in their wonderful etsy shop here

So I am planning on recreating something of a mix between both patterns but in fabric eeeeek!! am I mad ....... First thing I need to do is e-mail Twoems to ask if this is ok.  This is purely for my pleasure and experimentation!.  I have made a tentative start.  If it works I want to give it to the artist!

I have also been continuing with free motion quilting this table runner!    I am getting there and taking on board all of Jude's great advice!  It is getting the time at the moment but I will perservere!  Thinking of a burgundy binding or light yellow or pink????

Hope everyone had a great weekend.  I am off to get busy.

A gift!

Yesterday there was the excitement of first days at school and returns to new classes.  On Wednesday I had a surprise package in the post from Sarah at Sew Me.

Down the stairs I came to a package lying on the hall floor.  My first thought - I didn't order fabric!!  Then I opened it and found an envelope that said open pressie first and this was inside!

A gorgeous Zakka inspired pencil case all for me!  AND a little charm handmade for all us Hipbees by Judith's talented daughter!  You really should take a look at her Etsy shop - Poppy's Pocket.  She makes the most wonderful polymer clay creations and is very talented.

I love my little bee and I have yet to find a special spot just for him!! My kids were eyeing it up but they won't be touching him!  Now I have a great little reminder of my fellow worker bees over at the Hipbees and this brings a smile to my face!

Thank you so much Sarah for such a kind and thoughtful gift and card. x

First day back to school!

What no sewing???? Yes, today here in sunny Newmilns is first day of term for primary school pupils!  Jacob has begun primary 4 ( where did that time go????) and Emma has her first day ( morning really) in p 1.

I haven't sobbed yet!  I am saving it for when my baby is away for her first full day, packed lunch and everything :(
Thanks for all the help with my FMQ on my table runner.  I took the lovely Judith's advice and did some more quilting last night and am hopefully working toward a more even distribution of quilting now!  Pics to follow soon.

Hello!  I hope everyone had a great weekend.  Our weekend was filled with the local Gala day ( the kids went with their Grandparents but I stayed home because I am not a fan of those kind of things).  They had great fun of course.

I have been practising some FMQ and decided to jump head first and try it out on my table runner for my etsy shop.  I really do need some honest opinions though.  I am not experienced at all with FMQ but I am reasonably pleased with how it has turned out so far on this runner.  I still need to do a little work with the stars ( thinking some v simple hand quilting ) and finish the borders but the bulk is done.

So please share your honest opinion - I think I like it and once de threaded and washed I think it will be better.  But when you look at it do you see nice quilting or just a scrambled eggy mess???  I don't want to embarass myself selling something that is naff!

Thanks for your help!

Hung at last!

Well what a glorious sunny day we have here again!  The kids and I went to the library this morning, then the post office and then home and it was really hot at only 10am!

The kids got a haul of books to read so were happy.  Jacob (will be 8 soon) has begun wanting to read his own novels in bed at night now.  He has been getting on quite well with this but I am still reading a book with him too as we love to do that together before bed!   I love the empowerment kids get when they can read by themselves.

Today I managed to finally get two wall hangings hung.  I made these both for myself with a view to hanging them above my sewing area to inspire me!

The first one is called ' Spools'.  Three empty spools of thread!  The second one is 'Anyone for tea?'  as if you need ask me!!! I wanted to use up some of these scraps and try out this saucer and cup block and am so glad I did.  The possibilities are endless - I am thinking coffee?  cake? and so on!

Anyway I am off to make some tea now seeing as the kids are quiet at the moment, which probably means they are up to something!
Have a great weekend!

Thursday already?

Hello!  Well I can't believe today is Thursday already!  Time flies when you are having fun doesn't it?  The kids are due back at school next Thursday so one more week and then some quiet sewing time again!

This week has been quite quiet on the making front.  I received some lovely packages but have lots of ideas brewing for this -

Alice at Backstitch tweeted that she had Sketch in stock and I was sorely tempted but tried to hold back.  Of course, I couldn't and opted for 4 FQs to go with this gorgeous print from the Quilt Blocks range.  I have some white cotton too from Alice, Klona which I love to work with.
Aren't the colours just yummy??? This will be a quilt and plans are being made!

I also finished my Brit Quilt Swap 3 mini quilt.  I just need to label it and then it will be ready for posting.

So that is what I have been up to lately in between being peacemaker with the kids and some Free Motion quilting practise!  I love hand quilting but I also love the look of FMQ on quilts , so the darning foot thingy is out, the feed dogs are down and I have Leather gloves!!!  I read somewhere that these worked for someone so I will give them a try!

First bee block!

Hello all!  I hope everyone had a good weekend.  I watched quite a lot of the Olympic events and thoroughly enjoyed 'Super Saturday' as it is being called here in GB!  It was so exciting!

I also completed my first ever Bee block.  I was asked to join the Hipbees, a new and fab group of talented ladies who wanted to start up a new online quilting bee.

Renee from Nellie's Niceties is our Queen Bee for our first month, August.  She asked if we would be so kind as to make some house blocks for a cute quilt full of individual homes!

Renee provided the gorgeous Summersville by the very talented and creative Lu Summers.  It is such a lovely fabric with vivid colours and versatile prints.  I love it so much.

So I cracked on with mine and here it is.

The blue birdie and the hello are not Summersville but I wanted to add them to make it a little more individual.  I have never done a house block before so I wanted to keep it simple.  I love the red weave fabric and the square on the left is meant to be a planter with some blooms growing out the top!

The little 'hello' is off a 'Hello Pilgrim' selvage by Lizzy House.

So there you are!  My first quilting bee block!  It was quite nerve wracking cutting into someone else's precious fabric but I got there and can't wait for next month!!

My first giveaway win!

2 Fridays ago I got a message on Instagram saying I had won Anna Maria Horner's Instagram giveaway!  I had to re read several times and then e-mailed her office as requested thinking this was a joke!

It wasn't and I had won something I hadn't even entered.  Turns out Anna is doing a Friday Instagram giveaway and randomly choosing a follower.  Lucky me!  I don't win things.

I received my lucky package yesterday and I shall show you what I got ;

A sewing pattern although I can't sew clothes, would anyone be interested ?

Gorgeous shades of purple ribbon !

Innocent crush Voile.

Unsure about which range this is but quilting cotton.

Home decor weight fabric sateen finish lovely!

Think this may be Little Folks but def a Voile.

I am so chuffed at what I received.  I have never sewn with Voliles before so any advice on what I can do with them would be great!  They are gorgeous and soft.  The home decor fabric isn't too heavy and lovely and silky.

Sorry for all the photos but I wanted to show you every little gift I received.

Thanks AMH!! x
